In 2008, Scott Saxon, General Manager of the Barbara B. Mann Performing Art Hall at FSW, started the High School Musical Awards. He wanted to recognize the students who put on these local school productions — whether they’re acting, playing in the orchestra, building the sets, making the costumes or helping out backstage.

The students spend months working on their productions, rehearsing songs and dance steps, designing and painting the sets, sewing the costumes and doing everything else it takes to put on a show. Most schools start working on their productions in the fall and rehearse all year until they present their shows in March or April - including after school and weekends.

“They put a lot of work into it,” Saxon says. “They rehearse every day. They practice every day. They need to be celebrated, too. It’s our local version of Broadway’s Tony Awards.”
